Food Additive Spotlight
Azodicarbonamide - Everyday Poison
Next time you put a hot pocket in the microwave you might want to read the label first and look for this biological buzz saw. Azodicarbonamide is a food additive most often used as a bleaching agent for flour. Sound innocuous? Studies show that it also acts as an immuno suppressant by halting the expression of T-cells, inducing DNA damage through the production of free radicals, and it is linked to asthma. All of this is not too surprising for a food additive that it is used commercially as a foaming agent in the production of plastics.
