More fat = less bone density
The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology reports on a new study out of the University of Missouri School of Medicine implicating excess body fat with decreased bone mass.
The study is of high interest due to its scale (over 6,000 subjects) and the varied ethnic and genetic backgrounds of the subjects. 1988 of the subjects were Chinese and 4489 were Caucasian from several hundred different ethnic mixes.
The results show conclusively that higher body fat correlates to lower bone mass. While the study does not indicate why this may be the case, the number and size of the study does tell us one thing for sure – weight loss and osteoporosis are at odds with each other.
If you want to avoid osteoporosis, lose some body fat.
