I started walking on the treadmill every night. What should I be doing along with the treadmill? Just wanting to shape up, not build muscle.

building muscle is not a bad thing. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism will be (and therefore the more calories you will burn while at rest). Don't worry about getting "big". It is a misconception women have. You want muscles. Rather than looking big and bulky, you will look slim and sexy.

One simple change, rather than doing the treadmill at night, do it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach to maximize your fat burning.

I found that if I need to shed fat quickly there is a great cardio routine that I perform called "guerilla cardio". Simply walk or run at high intensity for 20 seconds followed by 10 seconds of rest. Perform this cycle for 6-12 minutes depending on your individual fitness levels. The results are awesome!

If you just want to shape up and dont want to build muscle, i guess your on your way. Just doing treadmill alone along with proper diet, it will give you a good cardio exercise and toned body.

This goes against everything I have been taught. I was taught to eat something first think in the morning to start metabolism. Also not to exercise before eating.

There are conflicting studies on whether or not you burn more fat on an empty stomach. Though, there is an recent study in article on the site here that says it does.

But it is variable, I have some clients that do and others who don't. What I should have said is you can maximize your fat burning by doing cardio first thing in the morning. See what works for you, doing it on an empty stomach or eating a small snack before (only a couple hundred calories).
